Summit Community Bank Supports OEF Reading Month

Okemos, MI (May 31, 2012) - Summit Community Bank supports the Okemos Education Foundation (OEF) by co-sponsoring the Okemos Public School’s Author Visit every March. In addition, the Bank encourages students to take an active role in enhancing their reading skills by participating in the program “Reach Your Summit.”

The Bank’s Reach Your Summit through Reading program encourages Okemos Public School students in kindergarten through fifth grade to read (or be read to) 10 books during March is Reading Month.

“Enriching the minds of young people and helping to foster a community of avid readers is important to us on many different levels,” said Summit Community Bank Assistant Vice President and Okemos Market Manager Adam Goss. “Because we are a community bank we feel honored to give back to the communities that so generously support us.”

According to the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), business owners are an integral part of the community. As a neighborhood leader, they contribute to the welfare of the community and its members. As an employer, they understand the importance of literacy and the challenge of helping everyone learn how to read proficiently. The NIFL firmly believes reading is a gateway to future success in school and in life and Summit Community Bank agrees.

The winners of the Reach Your Summit through Reading program were; Lauren Peck of Bennett Woods, Kendall Johnson of Hiawatha, Andrew Marshall of Cornell and Jacob Berman of Central. Each student won a Piggy Bank full of money as well as Piggy Banks for each fellow student in their classroom. In addition, Liam Peck of Bennett Woods won a pizza party for his class and a $100 donation to the Central Montessori library in his honor from Summit Community Bank.

“This is our 4th year of sponsoring March is Reading Month, and our employees greatly appreciate and look forward to this opportunity to get involved with the program and meet local students and their families.” added Goss. “As a community banker and lifelong resident of Okemos, I am proud of Summit Community Bank’s commitment to the OEF and the families and businesses that make our community great.”
