Reach Your Summit Supports Okemos Education Fundation, Promotes Reading in Schools

Okemos, MI (June 9, 2010) - Summit Community Bank has supported the Okemos Education Foundation (OEF) by co-sponsoring the Okemos Public School’s Author Visit every March. This year, however they not only wanted to help make an author visit possible to the students, but also encourage students to take an active role in books by committing to read and “Reaching the Summit.”

The Bank’s Reach Your Summit through Reading program encouraged Okemos Public School students in kindergarten through fifth grade to read (or be read to) 10 books during March is Reading Month through April 12. The participants then submitted a list of books read to Summit Community Bank and were entered into a drawing for prizes.

“This event is very important to the Bank on a lot of different levels,” said Summit Community Bank Market Manager Adam Goss. “One being that the bank acknowledges the community’s commitment to education and is proud to give back to the community that supports us and our families.”

According to the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), business owners are an integral part of the community. As a neighborhood leader, they contribute to the welfare of the community and its members. As an employer, they understand the importance of literacy and the challenge of helping everyone learn how to read proficiently. The NIFL firmly believes reading is a gateway to future success in school and in life and Summit Community Bank agrees.

The winners of the Reach Your Summit through Reading program were, Kianna Tucker who won a Piggy Bank full of money and a $25 gift certificate to Schuler Books. In addition, Ambrose Meteyer won a pizza party for his class and a $100 donation to Haiti relief in his honor from Summit Community Bank.

“The Okemos Education Foundation’s strength and vision is a perfect example of what makes Okemos such an innovative and enticing place to live, work and raise a family,” added Goss. “As a community banker and lifelong resident of Okemos, I am proud of Summit Community Bank’s commitment to the OEF and the families and businesses that make our community great.”
